Core Skills
Curriculum Intent:
Our aim is for all students to be able to access the broader curriculum and to embrace the Burgate
expectations [be safe, be respectful, be ready to learn].
We want our students, through a range of targeted interventions, to improve levels of literacy and numeracy and to demonstrate high expectations of themselves as individuals.
Through collaborative and bespoke learning, we aim to close the gap for Core Skills students and for them to improve their personal organisation, resilience and independence.
Core skills learning takes place in our learning hub where students work in small groups and receive high levels of support.
Interventions are bespoke to the individuals who follow the core skills curriculum pathway and along with targeted lessons (delivered by the Lead Practitioner, specialist teachers and LSAs) include:
Readingplus - an online reading lesson designed to improve the quality of students reading for meaning and reading speed at comprehension level.
Rapid plus - Small group reading support delivered by an accredited LSA
Catch Up Literacy - booster sessions delivered by a Catch Up Literacy accredited LSA
Catch Up Numeracy - one to one booster sessions delivered by a Catch Up Numeracy accredited LSA
